Hi! I’m Emily Ebbert. I received my Magic Moment in January 2008, a playhouse in my backyard. I also have a twin brother, Ethan, who received his Magic Moment in December 2008, which was a trip to Disney World.
I have Hydrocephalus and mild Cerebral Palsy. I have had 7 VP Shunt revisions and 1 brain decompression for Chiari Malformation. My childhood was consistent with severe pressure headaches and a shunt revision about every 3-5 years like clockwork. My last revision was in March of 2018, and this is the longest I’ve gone in between revisions. I will always worry about my Hydrocephalus, but it has never really stopped me from living.
Magic Moments was never really just a moment for us. Beyond the Moment allowed us to have experiences that wouldn’t have been available to us otherwise. From baseball games, to state fairs, to the yearly Family Camp, much of our childhood was surrounded by Magic Moments. Aside from the experiences, I also connected with so many families and made so many friends through years at camp that I am still in contact with today. I am now actively involved in Magic Moments, and I was a counselor at Family Camp this year after a decade of being a camper.
As for now, I am in nursing school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I also recently started working as a Patient Care Technician while in school. I definitely believe that my experiences growing up have led me to this career path, and am certain that it is where I am meant to be.
